Whenever someone asks me what I want to study in college or what I want to do after college I always just say nothing. I don’t want to go to college. I don’t want to get stuck in a job I hate just to make a bunch of money that I don’t have the time to spend. And even if I pick a job I enjoy, I will be burdened with the stress of barely making ends meet each month. I don’t want to attend college just so that they can mold me into whatever America needs at the time and spit me out into a world that’s already laid out for me. I don’t want to sit in a classroom staring at a textbook and stressing about some bullshit test that doesn’t even test my knowledge on the subject. The education system is so flawed it makes me sick. I love learning, but I can’t stand the pressure that is puts on students starting at such a young age. If I get hit by a car at age 30 and die, would I really be proud of myself for suffering through college and stressing about all of those exams? I want to go out into the world and learn things. I want to connect with people, change things, see what all of this planet has to offer and actually leave my impression on this world. I only have roughly 90 years on this planet. Why would I stress through college just to qualify for a job I hate in hopes that one day I will save up enough money to retire even though I will be far too old to actually put the money to use. Then, I will just sit around and wait to die. Everyone’s life is already planned out for them and if someone doesn’t follow the exact plan then everyone looks down on them. Everyone thinks that they’re a failure and that they need to get their life together. I have no passion to pursue. I have no big dream. I just want to live and travel and experience things and feel. Why can’t I do that?
I hate things like this. You don’t have to go to college. School doesn’t have to be for you. But good luck getting a job and good luck with traveling the world without one. College sometimes gets such a bad rap by high schoolers on tumblr and it’s actually horribly childish. Not all schools are the same. Not all school’s force you to pick a job. You have to find the right fit for you, and it’s scary as hell and it’s terrifying to leave what you know, and it’s hard to accept the fact that it’s time to grow up.
I’m just saying, college has been one of the best experiences of my life. I didn’t know what I wanted to do when I entered but I took amazing classes, met amazing people, went on trips I couldn’t have done otherwise, learned new things, and in general, had my eyes opened to a whole new world I never imagined. I hated high school, and yes, I am stressed in school over things that won’t matter in the long run. But my point is that high school kids seem to have this idea that college will hinder you from “living your life” and will someday get you stuck in a job you’ll hate. It’s not like that. It’s gaining knowledge to get a career you will love. It’s giving you options and choices and knowledge to face the future and better your life. It’s okay not to know what you want to do, and it’s okay to be scared. But these past three years have been an incredible experience for me. And I know if I am hit by a car at the age of 30, I’ll be so glad I spent 4 years here. I’ll be so glad for everything my school has enabled me to do.
Don’t be so closed minded.
